In brief: For drinking water, choose a container whose manufacturer explicitly documents suitability for food contact. A fuel can is not automatically suitable for drinking water, even if it is made from HDPE.

Which design fits the use?

DesignStrengthCheck
5–10 L compacteasy to carry, small footprintsmall openings can be harder to clean
10–20 L with tapconvenient at a campsite or in storagetap and seal must remain clean and accessible

20 L storagemore water per containerheavy when full; consider the carrying route

Food-contact suitability should be documented

EU rules set requirements for plastic materials intended to contact food. Drinking-water suitability is therefore not inferred from colour or material name; manufacturer information and compliance documentation are used instead.

Keep uses separate: Water and fuel containers should have permanently separate uses and be easy to distinguish. A container previously used for fuel should not be treated as a drinking-water can.
