Five use cases compared
| Use | What matters most | Also check |
|---|---|---|
| Car | upright position, load restraint, modest quantity | transit countries, ferries and rental conditions |
| Camping or motorhome | heat, storage place and separation from water cans | vehicle, campsite and country rules |
| Boat or outboard | corrosion exposure, restraint and controlled transfer | boat maker, harbour and local navigation rules |
| Generator | controlled filling and distance from hot parts | manual, cool-down time, storage and fire rules |
| Workshop | clear identification and repeated inspection | workplace risk assessment and hazardous-substance rules |
Car
A smaller can that can be secured properly is often more useful than the largest available model. Keep it upright and protect it from sliding, tipping and impact. A legal maximum is not a recommendation to carry that amount.
Camping and motorhomes
Heat, cooking equipment and limited space require extra care. Keep fuel cans clearly separate from water containers and follow the vehicle, campsite and country rules before travel.
Boats and outboards
A spare transport can and a portable outboard fuel tank do different jobs. Secure storage, compatible fuel lines and the engine manufacturer instructions all matter.

Generators
The equipment manual sets fuel type, filling and cool-down procedures. Carbon-monoxide exposure is also a key part of safe generator placement.

Workshops
Commercial use can bring additional duties for labelling, storage and worker protection. Private transport exemptions and domestic garage examples should not be applied to a workplace.
Four-step decision
- Confirm the liquid and manufacturer instructions.
- Choose the smallest practical capacity.
- Check carrying, restraint and transfer.
- Review rules for the country, operator and workplace.
Camping & motorhomes
Plan water and fuel containers as separate systems and measure the available storage space.
