1. Define the liquid first
Containers for drinking water, general liquids and motor fuel are not interchangeable. For petrol or diesel, use a container whose manufacturer documentation and permanent marking identify the intended use. Do not improvise with beverage bottles, old chemical containers or unmarked cans.
2. Describe the real use
A can carried occasionally in a passenger car has different practical demands from one used for a generator, workshop or boat. Plastic may suit you when
low weight and easy handling matter. Inspect age, brittleness, deformation and the manufacturer’s stated service conditions.
Neither material is automatically the safest in every situation. Suitability, condition and handling matter more than a simple material slogan.
5. Choose the smallest practical capacity

6. Inspect the closure and spout
The can should stand securely and close without damaged threads, seals or improvised adapters. A dedicated spout can improve control, but it must be designed for the can and kept in good condition.
7. Inspect before every use
Check the body, seams, handle, cap, seal and marking. Cracks, severe deformation, corrosion, leakage, damaged threads or an unexplained odour are reasons not to continue using the container until it has been assessed or replaced.

Can any container be used for petrol or diesel?
