Use country tables as a planning tool
ADAC travel guidance shows materially different approaches across European countries, including small permitted quantities and outright prohibitions. Such summaries are useful for planning but should be rechecked close to departure.
Break the trip into four layers
- Rules at the point of departure.
- Rules in every transit country.
- Rules at the destination.
- Operator conditions for ferries or other controlled transport.
Ferries can be stricter than the road rule
A ferry ticket does not automatically authorise a spare can. Operators publish their own dangerous-goods conditions and these can vary by route.
The container still matters
An allowed quantity does not make an unsuitable or leaking container acceptable. Use a clearly marked, undamaged fuel can and secure it upright in the vehicle.
Frequently asked questions
Is there one EU-wide spare-fuel limit?
No. ADAC travel guidance lists different limits and some prohibitions across European destinations. Check the current rule for every country on the route.
Is the destination rule enough?
No. Transit-country rules apply during the journey, and ferry operators can impose their own conditions.
Does travelling inside the EU remove all restrictions?
No. Customs arrangements and safety or transport rules are different subjects; national and operator rules can still vary.
